New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo sent a defiant message to the NFL after one of his trademark power runs was flagged for unnecessary roughness during Sunday’s win over the Houston Texans.
Skattebo had a first quarter run wiped out for what was deemed unnecessary roughness as he lowered his helmet for extra yards. After the game, the second-year back said he has no intention of changing his running style, and pointed out that the league’s social media channels like to highlight it just as much as officials flag it.
“The NFL loves to post me when I do stuff like that but then also wants to take stuff from me,” Skattebo told reporters. “I’m going to run the ball like I want to run the ball. If I’m going to continue to get flags for it or fined for it, guess I’m going to play for free.”

Skattebo’s uncompromising style has won him praise, but can also be a bit of a hindrance when he won’t tone it down. The Giants tried to send that message to him during preseason. A fumble problem also cost him his role over the last couple weeks, so don’t expect the Giants to keep giving him touches if he can’t stop getting flagged.
Though his role has been spotty, Skattebo still has 418 rushing yards on 98 carries so far this season.
