INDIANAPOLIS -- Tennessee Titans quarterback Cam Ward looked disgusted on the sidelines in the middle of a blowout loss to the Indianapolis Colts. The subject of his ire: interim head coach Mike McCoy.
The rookie quarterback's frustration was understandable, given the cowardice McCoy displayed.
It was 4th and 3 from the Indianapolis 42.
Trailing 17-7 in the third quarter, McCoy had an opportunity to stay aggressive. Tennessee, on the precipice of a 1-7 record and having already fired their head coach Brian Callahan in season, had nothing to lose. Instead, punter Johnny Hekker jogged out onto the field.
Hindsight, you look back and say 'God, the last thing I thought they were gonna do was have the big touchdown run after that,'" said McCoy. "So, yeah, you look back and say 'God, I should have gone for that. Initially, when I said to punt it, you pin them deep and the defense had done a nice job through the second quarter. Pin them deep and get the ball back, but looking back that's one you wish you said 'I should have just gone for it.'"
Chickenshit behaviour.
CBS cameras caught Ward's emotional outburst after the fact. Clearly bothered by the fact that McCoy didn't go for it, Ward took his helmet off and verbalized his displeasure. No sooner did the Colts get the ball back than running back Jonathan Taylor break off an 80-yard touchdown run to make the score 24-7.
Beatings will continue until morale improves.
