Longtime Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cameron Heyward only ever had Mike Tomlin as a head coach from the time Pittsburgh drafted Heyward in 2011 through the Steelers' wild-card playoff loss to the Houston Texans in Januray.
Tomlin stepped down as head coach shortly after that defeat, and the Steelers recently hired Mike McCarthy as Tomlin's replacement. As for Heyward, he is only under contract through next season and will turn 37 years old in May. During a Tuesday appearance on "The Jim Rome Show," Heyward sent somewhat of a message to those running the Steelers.
"I don’t wanna play anywhere else," Heyward said, per Chris Ward of Steelers Now. "[Pittsburgh] is a very special place in my heart, but you always have to think about what can happen. That’s just being prepared for every opportunity. Being prepared that the Pittsburgh Steelers might not want me to be on their team next year. That’s just how you have to look at it. You have to be able to deal with change."
Plenty of uncertainty hovers over a Steelers team that was blown out by the Texans to the tune of 30-6 on Jan. 12. Most notably, it's unknown if McCarthy will be able to convince 42-year-old quarterback Aaron Rodgers to serve as Pittsburgh's starter for one more season.
If Rodgers retires or elects to reach free agency, he could leave the Steelers searching for an upgrade over long-time backup Mason Rudolph and 2025 sixth-round draft pick Will Howard. Theoretically, the status of McCarthy's quarterback room could impact how Heyward decides to handle the offseason.
Last summer, Heyward skipped some offseason activities until he and the Steelers agreed to a revised deal.
"One, I think is trying to win a Super Bowl, having the opportunity to compete. That's why you play this game," Heyward said about his mindset during a Tuesday appearance on "The Herd with Colin Cowherd" program, per Joe Clark of Steelers Depot. "Two, I think it's just installing my legacy further. I feel like I still have more work to do, on the field, off the field, and then continue to teach the younger guys, continue to learn from them and just continue to keep growing."
Some may say that the 2026 Steelers won't be a legitimate Super Bowl contender with or without Rodgers. It remains to be seen how Heyward will react whenever he and his teammates learn about Rodgers' intentions for next season.
