Can Aaron Glenn Do Anything to Save His Job?

Aaron Glenn job security is becoming one of the biggest conversations around the New York Jets, and nobody should be surprised. The Jets are 2-5 after losing to a previously winless Miami Dolphins team, and another season is heading toward a familiar destination. There is still football left to play, but Glenn is running out of opportunities to show that this is moving in the right direction. I missed my first ever home game at MetLife Stadium, for my daughters wedding, and I can honestly say I didn’t miss much.

Expectations change quickly in the NFL. Fans following the betting side can compare how the featured operators stack up, but the evaluation inside the Jets building should be much simpler. Is this team getting better, and is the head coach giving it a better chance to win? Right now, there is far too much evidence pointing the other way.

The Defense Has to Be His Calling Card

Glenn was hired with a defensive background, so that side of the ball has to carry some weight in this conversation. Nobody expects perfection, especially with injuries affecting the lineup, but fans should be able to identify what this defense does well consistently. Too often, the discussion after a loss is about the same problems showing up again.

Against New England, the inability to get a stop on the ground late in the game was particularly frustrating. You know the opponent wants to run, you know where the game is heading, and you still cannot get your offense another meaningful opportunity. Whether the answer involves scheme, personnel or execution, fixing it falls on Glenn.

Game Management Cannot Keep Being a Story

The two-minute issues Glenn addressed after the Miami loss are another concern. A rebuilding roster can explain some limitations. It cannot become the explanation for every clock decision, wasted opportunity or situation that looks less organized than it should.

These are areas where a head coach can help immediately. The Jets do not need another draft class to communicate clearly, understand the clock and have a plan for the end of a half. If Glenn wants ownership to believe in his long-term vision, the weekly operation has to support that argument.

Black Monday Is Becoming the Bigger Question

My guess is that Glenn gets the rest of the season. That is an opinion, not a report about what ownership has decided. An in-season change would not magically fix the roster, and the Jets still have young players who need meaningful development over the remaining games.

Black Monday feels like a different conversation. If the same mistakes keep showing up and the defense never establishes an identity, I have a hard time seeing the case for bringing him back. A couple of wins would help, but the quality of the football matters more than finding a way to dress up the final record.

There is a path for Glenn to change the conversation, but that window is just about shut. What would it take? Get the defense playing better, clean up the game management, and show that the young core is developing within a functioning team. Jets fans have heard plenty about what this program is supposed to become. Over the rest of this season, Glenn needs to give them something they can actually see.

Darren Mougey Should Get to Pick the Next Coach

If the Jets move on from Glenn, I would bring Darren Mougey back and give him the opportunity to choose the next head coach. Mougey still has to prove he can build a winning roster, but there are young players worth developing and three first-round picks coming in 2027. I want to see what he does with that opportunity rather than start over with another general manager.

Hopefully, that next hire would be an offensive-minded coach with a clear plan for the quarterback position. If the Jets draft a quarterback, they need to build the coaching staff and offense around developing him. Give Mougey the chance to find a coach who can deliver that continuity, get more from the young weapons, and finally give this team an offensive identity. We know the track record when the Johnson brothers pick a coach. It is time for a change.
