Can Chris Myarick's Versatility Help Him Earn a Giants Roster Spot?
USA TODAY Sports

Chris Myarick, Tight End/Fullback

Height: 6-foot-5 | Weight: 261 pounds
2022 Stats: GP: 16 GS: 8, 7 rec 65 yds, TD

Chris Myarick began his career with the Miami Dolphins, where he spent a couple of seasons bouncing off and on the practice squad. In 2021, the Giants signed Myarick to a contract, and he made three starts for New York that season.

In 2022 Myarick was re-signed, and with a new coaching staff and a new number, he found a role on the team as a fullback. He ultimately appeared in 16 games and started eight. Myarick proved a valuable asset for the Giants during their improbable playoff run.

Even after his breakout 2022 season, he was re-signed to a futures deal and will be in a dogfight to make this roster again. Myarick is a big, strong, highly intelligent football player, one of the reasons he is still a candidate to make this team.

He did a good job helping to open holes for Saquon Barkley. The question becomes, what will be the Giants calling card offensively? With all these new weapons on the team, will there still be room for a fullback?

Best Case Scenario

The best-case scenario is that the Giants still need a fullback on offense. In 2022 Myarick played in 28% of the offensive snaps. He also took 48% of the snaps on special teams. That is a valuable role defined by toughness and intelligence.

Even though the Giants have added tools on the offensive side, they don't currently have a pure fullback. His value only decreases if they decide to change their offensive philosophy. If the philosophy stays the same, Myarick should be poised to have another workmanlike season for the Giants.

Worst Case Scenario

Myarick is facing a numbers crunch at tight end, where Darren Waller and Daniel Bellinger are locked in, and Lawrence Cager will likely be the third tight end. As for blocking fullbacks, the coaching staff hasn't been afraid to use offensive linemen for this role.

If that is the case, the Giants just may not find a lot of advantageous opportunities to use Myarick's skill set unless there are injuries that deplete the positions where he can contribute.

What to Expect in 2023

It will be difficult to make this team off-season if you are a back-of-the-roster tight end or receiver. There is a lot of competition at those positions, which will give the Giants flexibility in how they want to construct the skill positions.

Today's game does not support a one-dimensional fullback. Unless Myarick can show that he can be a legitimate factor as a receiver, there is a good chance that one of the other tight ends fills in to do fullback duty on the rare occasion they want to use one.

Myarick will likely find himself on the outside looking in after training camp and possibly wearing another jersey.
