Can Jake Browning save Bengals' season after Joe Burrow's injury?

The last time Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Jake Browning replaced an injured Joe Burrow, he proved to be a dependable backup. Now, they need him to be way more than that.

Bengals receive crushing Joe Burrow injury update

Burrow suffered a left toe injury in the second quarter of Sunday's 31-27 home win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. On Monday, Bengals head coach Zac Taylor confirmed the QB will need surgery but didn't provide a timetable. He said the team has "a ton of confidence in Jake.

This is the second time over the past three seasons Browning has had to replace Burrow. In November 2023, the injury-prone starter suffered a season-ending wrist injury.

During his absence, the backup went 4-3 in seven starts, tossing 11 touchdown passes and seven interceptions. He also completed 70.4 percent of his passes that season, the best mark in the NFL among 32 eligible QBs (via Pro Football Reference).

However, Browning looked spotty against Jacksonville. The former Washington Huskies star finished 21-of-32 passing for 241 yards with two TDs but tossed three interceptions. He attributed the turnovers to rust.

"Preparing without taking reps is a challenge," the QB told Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer postgame. "My most recent game wasn't too long ago. The way the NFL works is preparing the starting quarterback to be ready. If you get to Sunday, and you aren't prepared..."

Then you can cost your team a victory. Perhaps Browning will play better in Week 3 at the Minnesota Vikings after a full week of practice as the starter.

Perennial MVP candidate Burrow is the Bengals' offensive keystone. But a less talented QB can step in and be productive. Cincinnati features wide receivers Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase, who combined for 17 receptions, 221 yards and two TD catches against Jacksonville.

Browning still didn't prove he could save the Bengals' playoff hopes in Week 2. They need him to play like a high-level starter. If he can't, Cincinnati should trade for another QB, perhaps Kirk Cousins of the Atlanta Falcons or Jameis Winston of the New York Giants.
