We have spoken at length all offseason regarding Justin Fields and his "last chance" with the New York Jets, and in truth, it does feel like it.
First day at camp on Tuesday as veterans report ... and last chance at stardom?
Now, we aren't saying that if things don't work out, Justin will be out of the league; we are saying it about his last chance at being a bona fide starter in the league.
Having a good offensive line in front of him, coupled with a solid running back trio and Garrett Wilson as his main weapon, Fields does have something to work with under Tanner Engstrand.
For ESPN's Ben Solak, he wonders if Fields can finally make something of himself in New York.
Rather surprisingly, the Jets gave him a starter's deal and an unimpeded path to the QB1 job,” Solak writes. “Now, the Jets have few pass catchers behind Garrett Wilson, but they have a pretty solid offensive line. I don't think they'll tip their hand (and put Fields in harm's way) too much during training camp, but I'll be watching the reports closely. And I won't be surprised if we see a 2022-like season for Fields.
“Back then, he posted 160 carries for 1,143 yards, the second most all time for a quarterback. If he can replicate that season with his legs, while getting more passing game help from Engstrand and Wilson than he ever got in Chicago, there just might be something there.”
Expected to be a very run-heavy offense, that plays into Fields' wheelhouse because, as we know, as a runner, he can be devastating, but it is more about his ability as a passer that people want to see improved.
With the Jets, Fields might not have to throw it 25+ times, with Breece Hall and Braelon Allen as his backs to take pressure off the passing game. Granted, that is good in theory, but as we know, it will all come down to execution with real NFL bullets flying.
This offseason has been one of positivity for the Jets and Aaron Glenn, with a foundation being built that the team hopes will lead to success in the future.
Will Fields be a part of that future? His 2025 form might just depend on it.
