The 2025 NFL season with be the fourth for Green Bay Packers guard Sean Rhyan. That means it will also be the final year of his entry-level contract, and his future is on the line. Rhyan faces a battle for his starting job and for a potential second contract with the team. So, it will be up to Sean Rhyan to secure his future with the Packers in 2025.

Can Sean Rhyan Secure His Future with the Packers in 2025? His Career So Far

The Packers selected Rhyan in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft. The former UCLA star played tackle in college, but was moved to guard when he reached the pros. Unfortunately, Rhyan’s rookie season was a major disappointment. He played just one snap in one game and that came on special teams.

Later in his rookie campaign, Rhyan earned a six-game suspension from the league for violating the NFL’s PED policy. He looked like another in a lengthy string of third-round busts the Packers had until that time.

But Rhyan bounced back in 2023. He didn’t earn a starting job, but he did finally see the field on offense, rotating series with starter Jon Runyan. That meant he saw playing time in every game as he gradually learned the NFL game.

Last season, Rhyan battled for the starting right guard spot with first-round pick Jordan Morgan. Rhyan won the job and started all 17 games while playing 89 percent of the team’s offensive snaps.

Rhyan’s Skill Set

Rhyan became a solid starter at right guard. He graded out as a better pass blocker than run blocker which was the opposite of where his grades stood the previous season.

Head coach Matt LaFleur liked the way he handled himself when he earned a starting job. “He is one accountable guy,” the coach said. “Any time you say something to him, he always takes accountability, and I think that’s an important part of this. You’ve got to know yourself and you’ve got to know what you’re good at and where you can improve. And to his credit, he always takes accountability, and he’s putting action behind it. I do think he’s in a much better position than he ever has been, so I’m excited to see what he does this year.”

Rhyan also brought an attitude and toughness to the lineup. He takes the game seriously and views it as a man-on-man battle between himself and defensive players.

The Packers have also used Rhyan at center in addition to guard, at least in training camp and in the preseason. The team values versatility for their offensive linemen and Rhyan may be the backup center behind Elgton Jenkins this season if he has a strong training camp.

Can Sean Rhyan Secure His Future with the Packers in 2025? A Double Battle

Rhyan now faces a double battle heading into 2025. First, he will be battling again for the starting right guard job. While Morgan will first be tried at left tackle, if he fails to secure that job, he could again compete with Rhyan for the right guard spot. Morgan is a former first-round pick, and the team is going to give him every chance to start somewhere along the offensive line.

Next, Rhyan will be one of three offensive linemen entering the final year of their entry-level contracts. The other two are right tackle Zach Tom and left tackle Rasheed Walker. GM Brian Gutekunst will not likely be able to sign all three to a second contract with the team. Tom has earned the best grades among the team’s offensive linemen in each of the last two seasons, so he is the Packers top priority. Then, Gutekunst must decide whether to offer a second contract to Walker or to Rhyan. He could also choose not to offer either a new contract.

If Rhyan doesn’t earn a second contract with the Packers, a strong season could help him earn a lucrative new deal with another team if he becomes a free agent next offseason.

So, simply put, there’s a lot on the line for Rhyan in 2025. How he does this year will have a big impact on the Packers in 2025 and his future in the NFL.
