Candidates for a Breakout Season for the Dolphins
The new look Miami Dolphins of 2025 are a much younger team than in recent years.
Which means they are primed for a few players to have breakout seasons this year and rise to the occasion in their larger roles on this year’s team.
Below, I name my Top 5 players who will have a breakout season in 2025.
I mean, honestly, he is one of the few cornerbacks on the roster who is somewhat trustworthy heading into the season. He should see a lot of playing time and will have a great opportunity to become a staple in the Dolphins’ starting lineup this year.
If he plays well and overachieves, he will be a huge fan favorite among all Miami Dolphins fans. As we know, going into this season, the secondary, especially the cornerback position, is a bit of a disaster on paper.
Nobody expects him to play like a CB1 (although he may be thrust into that role). But if he plays like a solid CB2, that would be an excellent achievement for him as a second-year player.
We know Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill are great; heck, they are paid like great players. But after those two, the Dolphins’ wide receiver room has questions.
The Dolphins did sign Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, which should help that position group, but Washington could end the season as Miami’s #3 WR if he picks up where he left off last season.
I know it’s not fun to think about last season, but the final four games at wide receiver, Washington had four to five receptions a game and was averaging over ten yards per reception.
Think about if he did that for half a season? Or an entire season?
Yeah, yeah, I know. No Dolphins fans feel great about Julian Hill. But take a second and look at that Dolphins tight end room right now?
Darren Waller is here, but he is on PUP and hasn’t practiced once yet, although he “may” return next week. Not to mention, he was retired last season and out of the sport.
Pharaoh Brown doesn’t even hide the fact that he doesn’t want to be passed the football, and he wants to block. I admire his honesty, but that won’t help us win games.
Tanner Conner…blah!
Look, if Julilan Hill can cut down on the penalties, slightly improve as a pass catcher, he will have a chance to be a factor in this offense.
Look, one of these tight ends is to replace SOME of the production we lost with Jonnu Smith.
Why not Julian Hill? (god, I can’t believe I just wrote that….but no, WHY NOT JULIAN HILL TO HAVE A BREAKOUT SEASON?)
He has been in the league for four seasons, so it’s not like a first or second-year guy we are waiting to break out. But he is a guy we are waiting to break out because he has been hurt so much that we don’t know who he is.
Seven games as a rookie, ten the following year, only three last season.
He has speed, size, and instincts, but nobody ever sees it because he is always in street clothes and wearing a baseball cap, watching from the sideline.
Melifonwu is a “Chris Grier Special,” as I like to call it. He will test off the charts as an athletic freak, but there is no production, and there is a reason the Lions let him walk.
And no other teams chased after him this offseason, looking to add him.
If Melifonwu can stay healthy, hell, I’m not even asking for 17 games; give me 15, he has the potential to be a very good starting-caliber safety in the NFL.
The tools are there; he just needs to be available each week.
Ok, I’m cheating by naming two guys here, so slap my hand. But the point is, we know De’Von Achane is a great running back, but who will step up behind him and grab that brass ring?
We know Alexander Mattison is having a fantastic training camp, and probably should be RB2 heading into the season, but we also know the Dolphins want one of these young guys to step up and be that RB2.
Mattison is older and has a lot of miles on those tires.
If Wright or Gordon can be a capable RB2, that would pay off the investment Chris Grier and the front office have made in the running back position over the past two drafts.
