GLENDALE – The Arizona Cardinals are starting to get reinforcements for their banged up secondary. Cornerback Garrett Williams has been placed off injury reserve and had his 21-day practice window open. Williams was injured in Week 2 vs. the Carolina Panthers on the last touchdown drive, when he collided with a fellow Arizona cornerback.

The 24-year-old has had a history of knee injuries, with many thinking the worse when he went down against Carolina. However, Williams is ramping up towards a return, which the Cardinals desperately need.

Cardinals open practice window for Williams:

“The Arizona Cardinals Football Club today announced that the team has designated cornerback Garrett Williams to return from the injured reserve list. Williams can begin practicing and the team can activate him to the 53-man roster at any time during the next 21 days or at the conclusion of the three-week period.”

Arizona is the 25th passing defense in the NFL, allowing 234.9 passing yards per game. A struggling secondary will need help in Week 9 vs. a Dallas Cowboys team that averages the most passing yards per game in the NFL. Quarterback Dak Prescott would be having an MVP-caliber season if the team’s defense wasn’t one of the league’s worst.

Adding Williams back to the lineup against Dallas would be a massive help to defend against Prescott. In 2024, Williams had the best Pro Football Focus zone coverage grade in the league, above 90.0. Despite only in his third year, the young Cardinals cornerback knows how to play, having nine pass deflections last season.

It isn’t clear if Williams will be ready for Monday’s game vs. the Cowboys, but he would completely change the dynamic of the game if starting.
