GLENDALE – Throughout his tenure as Arizona Cardinals head coach, Jonathan Gannon has earned the reputation of being a calm, level-headed authority figure for the team. His style of coaching has earned the praise of his players and the organization. On Wednesday, Gannon answered how and when he crafted his philosophy in coaching, which has become a viral moment for his bluntness when answering.
This is the wildest ending to a head coach press conference I’ve ever seen…

In 2007, Gannon was the Atlanta Falcons defensive quality control coach. Only a couple months after being hired for his first NFL coaching job, starting Falcons quarterback Michael Vick pleaded guilty to federal conspiracy charges related to dogfighting. Vick would go to federal prison for 23 months and Atlanta would lose its starting quarterback out of nowhere.
Once a coach loses its star quarterback to federal prison, every other moment seems smaller in comparison. Gannon was only 24 years old when the Vick controversy was in every major publications headlines, which taught the Cardinals coach very quickly about how to handle this much pressure and storm surround a franchise.
After only one season with the Falcons, Gannon would make his return to the NFL in 2012 with the Tennessee Titans under the same role. He would spend the next decade-plus climbing up the ranks before becoming Arizona’s head coach in 2023. During that time, Gannon has taken lessons from every team he’s been a part of, but no stop likely taught him the most like in Atlanta.
