One-time Pro Bowl running back James Conner put pen to paper on a one-year contract with the Arizona Cardinals in March after ball-carrier Kenyan Drake joined the Las Vegas Raiders in free agency.
Conner will open training camp sessions beneath Chase Edmonds on the depth chart but told "On The Fly with Lisa Matthews" the two could eventually be responsible for the NFL's top backfield.
"I just see us as a tandem, and I think we can be one of the best in the league," Conner explained, per Kevin Patra of the official NFL website. "He's been waiting for an opportunity, even though he has the body of work and a résumé, but to show more. I know he's anxious to show more, I'm anxious to show. With both of us together back there with K-1 (QB Kyler Murray), weapons on the outside, interior line, tackles, everybody. There's opportunity here. Me and Chase, we gonna feed off each other and keep this thing rolling."
Conner rushed for 721 rushing yards with six touchdowns and also added 35 receptions for 215 yards in 13 regular-season games with the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2020, but the 26-year-old has a lengthy and concerning injury history. Most recently, he underwent surgery to repair a toe issue he suffered during the offseason, but that shouldn't be a problem this summer.
