GLENDALE – Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray tore his right ACL almost 20 months ago. The journey back has been tedious. The mental and physical obstacles on his way back has molded the 27-year-old into becoming more mature and a leader for his team, and as he spoke to media about his leg’s health being better than ever, the team is on pace to do something special next season.

Cardinals Murray on his right knee’s health:

“Now I feel like I’m back to where I was before that. Obviously, my knee will probably never be the same as far as that goes. It’s just something you got to stay on top of,” Murray said. “This unit, I feel like, is definitely one of the best I’ve been a part of for sure.”

In 2024, Murray has the most passing yards and rushing yards since 2020, the last year he was a Pro Bowler. The team’s collapse towards the end of last season, losing five of its last seven games, hurt Murray’s Pro Bowl case but was more than warranted to join his teammate Trey McBride in Orlando.

Murray’s doubters over the years have critique the six-year Cardinals quarterback commitment to the game. Infamously, a clause in Murray’s contract that banned him from playing video games while watching film, which was later amended in his deal.

That label has slowly faded away since his ACL tear, and it isn’t because of pity. Murray has taken accountable for the team’s shortcomings in his tenure in Arizona. The lack of playoffs win eats away at him and wants to fix that blemish on that career. To take the steps towards that goal, Murray has held back-to-back summer trips with teammates to build camaraderie.

He has become more vocal with teammates to push their limits, which players have brought up to the media on their own accords. Murray has been a team captain since 2020, and almost poetically, last year earned the gold “C” on his jersey for his four-plus years of service in that role.

Despite being team captain, Murray wasn’t seen fit for the role by doubters. However, last year was a return to form for him not only on the field but as a leader. The golden star could represent the resurrection of Murray after the devasting ACL tear. He feels healthier than ever and prepared to live up to the gold star on his jersey and lead the team to its first playoffs appearance since 2021.
