The Carolina Panthers have officially parted ways with veteran running back Miles Sanders, ending a two-year experiment that saw little return on their investment. Released on Tuesday, Sanders, who signed a four-year, $25.4 million contract in 2023, was expected to anchor the Panthers’ backfield. However, his tenure in Charlotte turned out to be disappointing both for him and the franchise.
When Sanders joined the Panthers, he was hailed as a key piece to the offense. But after two seasons, his performance failed to match the lofty expectations tied to his $25.4 million deal. In his two years, Sanders managed just 637 rushing yards and three touchdowns on 184 carries, along with 51 catches for 302 yards and one touchdown. By releasing him now, Carolina saves $5.23 million in cap space, but the deal ultimately resulted in a dead money charge of $2.95 million.
In a twist that no one could have predicted, Chuba Hubbard has stepped up as the Panthers’ go-to back, especially after Sanders’ struggles. Hubbard, who was rewarded with a four-year, $33.2 million extension midway through the 2023 season, eclipsed Sanders both in rushing yards and touchdowns. His breakout season, including 1,195 yards and 10 touchdowns, left little room for Sanders to reclaim his starting role.
Panthers sign Patrick Jones II to supercharge pass rush
While Sanders may not have lived up to his hefty contract in Carolina, his career is far from over. The 27-year-old will likely land a role with a new team, where he can compete for a backup spot. After a strong 2022 season with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he posted career highs, Sanders can still provide value for teams in need of depth at the position.

As the Panthers move forward with Hubbard leading the backfield, the Sanders era in Carolina will be remembered as a cautionary tale of unmet expectations.
