The Carolina Panthers had first dibs on the waiver wire Wednesday and wasted no time making additions to their roster.
Carolina claimed six players off waivers: Linebacker Jamie Sheriff (Seattle Seahawks), cornerback Shemar Bartholomew (New York Jets), cornerback Keenan Isaac (Tampa Bay Buccaneers), cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields (Washington Commanders), offensive tackle Jarrett Kingston (San Francisco 49ers) and linebacker Jon Rhattigan (Seahawks). The Panthers also signed veteran cornerback Lonnie Johnson Jr. to their practice squad. Carolina has the intention of elevating him for Week 1 against the New Orleans Saints. The Houston Texans released Johnson Tuesday.
As a result, the following players who made the initial 53-man roster Tuesday were released, via Joe Person of The Athletic: Receiver Jalen Coker, receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette, safety Demani Richardson, cornerback D’Shawn Jamison, guard Cade Mays and defensive tackle Jayden Peevy.
Thus far, nine players have been signed back to Carolina’s practice squad: Running back Mike Boone, tight end Jordan Matthews, guard Mason Brooks, linebacker Kenny Dyson, defensive tackle Walter Palmore, defensive end TJ Smith, safety Alex Cook, linebacker Chandler Wooten and quarterback Jack Plummer.
Plummer, who went undrafted in April’s NFL Draft, was waived by Carolina Tuesday ahead of the 53-man roster cutdown. The Panthers currently have two quarterbacks, Bryce Young and Andy Dalton, on the active roster. Jake Luton is on injured reserve.
Plummer, 24, returns after doing enough to impress first-year head coach Dave Canales during training camp and the preseason. Plummer got plenty of work in Carolina’s three exhibitions, completing 43-of-68 passes for 406 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions.
The former Louisville signal-caller was particularly impressive in the preseason finale against the Buffalo Bills. He completed 21-of-29 passes for 278 yards and two scores. Plummer recorded a Pro Football Focus grade of 90.4, second highest among all Panthers.
