Carolina Panthers shakeup WR room with recent roster moves

When your father’s name hangs in the stadium rafters, expectations loom as large as Bank of America Stadium itself. But on Tuesday, the Carolina Panthers made a decisive move—waiving rookie wide receiver Muhsin “Moose” Muhammad III with an injury designation and re-signing T.J. Luther, a familiar name with a resume full of resilience.

The Panthers, deep in voluntary workouts and heading toward OTAs, are actively reshaping their wide receiver room. While Muhammad III brought legacy appeal and a flashes-in-practice reputation out of Texas A&M, a reported injury during team activities cut his shot short—at least for now.

Muhammad, the son of Panthers Hall of Honor member Muhsin Muhammad, was an undrafted free agent this spring. Despite limited college production, coaches were intrigued by his potential as a developmental project. But his path to the 53-man roster was steep, with new additions like first-round pick Tetairoa McMillan crowding the room.

Enter T.J. Luther. The 5-foot-11 speedster from Gardner-Webb is back in Carolina colors after a brief release earlier this month. At 24, Luther is a journeyman in the truest sense—having had stints with the Jets, Patriots, Steelers, and Packers without a single regular-season snap. But what he lacks in game-day experience, he makes up for in grit.

Luther clocked a 4.50 40-yard dash at his pro day and earned First-Team All-Big South honors in 2022. He’s been a steady practice squad presence, and his familiarity with the Panthers’ system could be his ticket to a training camp surprise.

For Panthers fans, this move isn’t just about names—it’s about opportunity. With OTAs approaching and depth charts far from set in stone, every snap counts. Don’t be shocked if Luther makes a late-summer push to crack the 53.

As for Muhammad III? If the injury isn’t serious, don’t rule out a return. Legacy or not, this league respects talent—and the Panthers haven’t forgotten his last name.
