Carson Wentz 'optimistic' about playing in Colts' season opener vs. Seahawks

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Carson Wentz and left guard Quenton Nelson returned to practice Monday coming off similar foot surgeries earlier this month that could've sidelined the pair anywhere from five to 12 weeks.

According to Josh Alper of Pro Football Talk, Wentz said he is "optimistic" about being in the lineup when Indianapolis opens the regular season against the Seattle Seahawks on Sept. 12.

"We’re gonna see how the foot responds," Wentz said when discussing his potential workload in practices ahead of Friday's preseason finale at the Detroit Lions.

The 28-year-old is not expected to participate in that contest.

Colts head coach Frank Reich and franchise owner Jim Irsay have both insisted Wentz won't be rushed back into action as 2020 fourth-round draft pick Jacob Eason and 2021 sixth-round draft selection Sam Ehlinger have been competing to temporarily replace the injured signal-caller atop the depth chart. However, Monday's developments suggest Wentz will be able to start less than three weeks from today.
