CB Amani Oruwariye wants long-term contract with Lions

The Detroit Lions spent a fifth-round pick during the 2019 NFL Draft to acquire cornerback Amani Oruwariye, and Pro Football Talk's Josh Alper notes that Oruwariye developed into a starter early into his second pro season.

Over the past two campaigns, the 26-year-old accumulated 110 total tackles, and he nabbed a career-best six interceptions across 14 games last season. Oruwariye is in the final year of his rookie contract but made it clear Wednesday that he'd like to commit his future to his current employer.

"Yeah, I love Detroit," Oruwariye admitted, according to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press. "I mean, I love being here. I love everything it’s given me. It’s given me a chance to play in the NFL, so ideally that’s where I want to be at. But we’ll see."

Also on Wednesday, Detroit running back Jamaal Williams emphatically stated he wants to win a Super Bowl with the organization "this year." Oruwariye added that it's important to have personal goals as long as they don't interfere with the team's objectives.

"But I think the next step is to win more games," Oruwariye remarked. "I think coming over to next year, just bringing that experience and just trying to get any of the new guys to mesh into the room well and just elevate the younger guys’ game, and then just keep being consistent as much as I can and try to get some more Ws."

One wonders if Oruwariye will look to cash in elsewhere next March if the Lions endure yet another losing season.
