CeeDee Lamb just tied a Michael Irvin record. There’s a reason not everyone is celebrating

CeeDee Lamb made his fifth consecutive Pro Bowl, tying Michael Irvin’s franchise record. He was an alternate who replaced Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Lamb had 75 receptions for 1,077 yards and three touchdowns in 14 games.

Lamb tied Irvin as an alternate

Lamb wasn’t initially selected to the Pro Bowl. He replaced Smith-Njigba, who withdrew. The five consecutive selections tie Irvin’s Cowboys record. The circumstances are different — Irvin was a starter in his Pro Bowl appearances. Lamb reached the milestone through the alternate process. The record is the same. How he got there is not.

75 catches, 1,077 yards, three touchdowns

Lamb’s numbers were solid but not dominant. An ankle injury limited him to 14 games. He topped 100 yards in six of those games. George Pickens emerged as the Cowboys’ primary target in 2025, taking some of the workload from Lamb. Three touchdowns for a receiver of Lamb’s caliber is a low total. The production was good enough for an alternate selection — but not for the initial roster.

The Cowboys need more than Pro Bowl alternates

Dallas has options in free agency. Breece Hall and Odafe Oweh are on the market. Jerry Jones has talked about wanting to compete for Super Bowls. The roster needs upgrades at multiple positions. Lamb tying Irvin’s record as an alternate reflects where the Cowboys are — close to something, but not quite there.

The Pro Bowl selection process has changed

Players withdraw from the Pro Bowl regularly now. Alternates fill the roster. The honor doesn’t carry the weight it once did. Lamb making five straight Pro Bowls is still an achievement. Tying Irvin’s franchise record matters. But when the fifth selection comes as a replacement for another receiver, it says something about where Lamb’s season ranked among the league’s best. The record is real. The context around it is complicated.
