Chamarri Conner is posed to take over the Sneed role.

During the Brett Veach era, Kansas City has been looking at ways to not only be versatile with their players but also stay away from huge contracts. This has been exemplified after Patrick Mahomes got his half-a-billion-dollar contract. One of the ways the Chiefs have done that is by not giving out second contracts to cornerbacks, despite their huge value. An example of that was letting Charvarius Ward walk and sign a large deal with the 49ers. Kansas City may be looking to do the same with Sneed. 

It is going to be difficult to find a Sneed replacement but if the Chiefs are able to successfully replace him they will save cap space. Over the past few years, Sneed has played multiple positions. He has spent time in the slot, deep zones and various other defensive back positions. In Kansas City, he is most known for his ability to blitz from the slot corner position. Last season Sneed was responsible for 3.5 sacks. 

His versatility comes from his time in college. Coming from a smaller school Sneed started two years playing corner but in his last season at Louisiana Tech Sneed was asked to switch to playing safety.   

While Conner did not have the exact same trajectory of a college career as Sneed, Conner also played significant snaps as a true safety and a slot corner. The similarities go way further than that. 

Their measurables are nearly identical. They are almost the same weight, arm length, and hand size. Both Sneed and Conner are exactly six feet tall.   

Their combine results are also nearly identical. From their 40-yard dash time to their vertical and broad jump their measurables are perfectly aligned. They were given similar prospect grades by the NFL and Next Gen Stats.    

Heading into the 2023-2024 NFL season Sneed is on the last year of his rookie contract. Conner will have limited opportunities to improve during live action. On the current depth chart he is listed as the third free safety. His position in the depth chart means he will be a heavily utilized special teams player. However, Kansas City has shown over the past year to utilize younger players when they show off a skill set. This is especially true for defensive backs.

One criticism of his play has been his tackling. Coming out of the draft his poor angles and below-average body control mean he has been a liability tackling in the open field.

This is a skill set that can be worked on and Kansas City has an entire offseason to work on that. He is going to be a project over the next season. Fans should have low expectations about the impact he will have on the 2023 NFL season.

However, if Conner shows the necessary skill set Conner will be the next slot corner/safety for Kansas City. His success will be another example of Veach and the Chiefs finding a versatile player. The success of finding prospects later in the draft to avoid signing veterans to long-term deals will keep the Chiefs in Super Bowl contention for years to come.
