Chargers Add 2 RBs To Active Roster Ahead of Vikings Matchup
NFL: Pro Football Hall of Fame Game-Los Angeles Chargers at Detroit Lions Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

The Los Angeles Chargers made a pair of key roster moves Thursday afternoon, elevating running backs Nyheim Hines and Jaret Patterson from the practice squad to the active roster ahead of Thursday Night Football against the Minnesota Vikings.

Bolstering a Battered Backfield

The promotions come amid a wave of injuries that have thinned Los Angeles’ running back depth. Najee Harris is out for the season with an Achilles tear, rookie Omarion Hampton remains on injured reserve with an ankle injury, and Hassan Haskins (hamstring) was ruled out earlier this week.

To add stability, the Chargers also signed veteran Trayveon Williams to the practice squad on Tuesday, giving the unit a mix of experience and special teams versatility.

With Haskins sidelined, rookie Kimani Vidal is expected to handle lead-back duties, while Hines and Patterson provide critical depth and complementary skill sets.

Hines’ Speed and Experience

Do You Have Big Kicker Energy?

A 2018 fourth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts, Hines has carved out a reputation as one of the league’s most dynamic return specialists and a reliable pass-catching back. Over his career, he’s totaled 1,202 rushing yards, 1,778 receiving yards, and four special teams touchdowns. In recent weeks, Hines has already contributed on kick returns, including a 40-yard return in the Week 6 win over Miami that set up the game-winning drive.

Hines’ elite quickness and versatility make him a valuable chess piece for head coach Jim Harbaugh, especially as the Chargers continue to experiment with their offensive balance.

Patterson Adds Power and Production

Jaret Patterson, who first entered the league as an undrafted free agent in 2021, brings a contrasting, downhill style. In limited NFL action with Washington and Los Angeles, he’s rushed for 344 yards and two touchdowns. A decorated college player at Buffalo, Patterson recorded three consecutive 1,000-yard seasons and 52 career rushing touchdowns, including a historic 409-yard, eight-touchdown performance in 2020.

As the Chargers prepare to face a Vikings defense expecting the return of Aaron Jones, Los Angeles’ backfield reshuffle highlights both necessity and opportunity — a chance for new contributors to steady a depleted unit in primetime.
