Chargers add a former first round pick following a recent injury that created a big need on their roster at a specific position

The Los Angeles Chargers are off to a hot start at 2-0 and alone at the top of the AFC West standings. Their Week 2 win over the Las Vegas Raiders also came with some bad news, though, as the team saw their edge rusher Khalil Mack go down with an injury.

He has since been placed on the IR and will at least miss the next four weeks, and as a result, the Chargers added to their edge room. NFL insider Jordan Schultz reports that the team is signing former top-five pick Clelin Ferrell.

Chargers sign DE Clelin Ferrell after Khalil Mack suffers an injury in Week 2

The Raiders drafted Ferrell with the fourth overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He spent his first four years in the NFL with the Raiders before signing with the San Francisco 49ers in 2023. He finished the year with 3.5 sacks and set a new career high with 13 QB Hits. Despite this, he would end up on his third team in 2024 by signing with the Washington Commanders. He appeared in 14 games, recording 3.5 sacks and nine QB hits.

Ferrell hasn't lived up to his draft position, but has become a successful role player who should be a solid addition for the Chargers. With Macks sidelined, the team will rely on their rotation of players to fill the void. Tuli Tuipulotu, Caleb Murphy, and Bud Dupree all will likely play big roles, and now Ferrell can join the fold. He is starting on their practice squad, but I don't think it will take long for him to get elevated to the active roster. His ability to win as a pass rusher off the edge should help him see snaps on game day sooner rather than later.
