The Los Angeles Chargers made a pair of defensive additions to their practice squad on Tuesday, signing defensive tackle Kyle Peko and veteran safety Marcus Williams. In corresponding moves, the team released wide receiver Luke Grimm and running back Nyheim Hines from the 16-man unit as the Bolts prepare for their upcoming matchup against the Tennessee Titans.

Williams, 29, is a former second-round pick of the New Orleans Saints in 2017 who has spent the past few seasons with the Baltimore Ravens. After signing a five-year, $70 million deal with Baltimore in 2022, Williams struggled with injuries and inconsistent play, culminating in a benching midway through last season. The Ravens designated him a post-June 1 cut this offseason, ultimately releasing the safety in March.

More than seven months after leaving Baltimore, Williams has found his first post-Ravens opportunity with the Chargers. NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero notes that Williams joins a back-end group that includes Tony Jefferson and others as the Bolts seek depth with Derwin James’ availability in question following a Week 8 injury.

The Chargers Conducted a Thorough Safety Search

Williams’ signing follows a late-week workout with the team, during which the team also evaluated veterans Marcus Maye, Lewis Cine, and ex-Raven Daryl Worley. While Worley could have joined his 11th NFL team, it was Williams who earned the practice squad spot. Chargers GM Joe Hortiz, who was in Baltimore when the team signed Williams in 2022 and later orchestrated the trade sending Alohi Gilman to the Ravens for Odafe Oweh, is familiar with the former safety’s skill set and potential value.

Adding Depth Up Front

Defensive tackle Kyle Peko joins Williams in bolstering the Chargers’ defensive depth. The move reflects Los Angeles’ ongoing adjustments to a roster navigating injuries and performance concerns. Meanwhile, the release of offensive players Grimm and Hines clears space on the practice squad, providing flexibility as the Bolts prepare for their clash with the Titans.

Williams brings NFL experience and a history of starting at safety, providing insurance for a Chargers secondary facing an uncertain near-term outlook. The practice squad additions could play a key role if the Bolts’ top defenders remain sidelined, giving coach Joe Hortiz more options for rotation and depth as the season progresses.
