The Los Angeles Chargers made a move to stabilize their injury-riddled backfield on Tuesday, signing veteran running back Trayveon Williams to the practice squad. The addition comes just days after yet another setback at the position, as Hassan Haskins limped off the field in Sunday’s 38–24 loss to the Indianapolis Colts.

Williams, 28, brings experience and special teams value to a depleted roster. A sixth-round pick by the Cincinnati Bengals in 2019, the former Texas A&M standout has carved out a career as a reliable depth option. He finished his rookie deal with Cincinnati before re-signing on one-year contracts in both 2022 and 2023.
Last season, Williams appeared in all 17 games, primarily contributing on special teams. He briefly joined the Cleveland Browns practice squad after being released by the Bengals but did not appear in a game. His familiarity with AFC competition and pass-protection ability make him an immediate insurance policy for a backfield running on fumes.
Los Angeles’ running back situation has been a revolving door this season. Najee Harris is out for the year with an Achilles injury, and first-round rookie Omarion Hampton remains on injured reserve with an ankle sprain. Haskins, who had been playing through a chest injury, aggravated a hamstring issue in Week 7.
ESPN’s Kris Rhim reported during the game, “RB Hassan Haskins just limped off the field. He was struggling to put weight on his right foot. Trainers working with him on the sideline.”
With Haskins sidelined, rookie Kimani Vidal assumed lead-back duties, logging 13 touches to Haskins’ three. But neither made a major impact, as Justin Herbert attempted a season-high 55 passes. If Haskins can’t play Thursday night against Minnesota, Nyheim Hines is expected to be elevated from the practice squad.
“Perhaps this is nothing more than precaution for the Chargers,” one report noted, “but the depth is paper-thin right now.”
The Chargers’ running back injuries coincide with mounting issues on the offensive line. Rashawn Slater is out for the season, and rookie Joe Alt remains sidelined by a high-ankle sprain. The unit has allowed 18 sacks, tied for fifth-most in the NFL.
According to Dianna Russini of The Athletic, the Chargers “are exploring running back and offensive line depth” ahead of the trade deadline, with possible targets including Jerome Ford and Breece Hall.
At 4–2, the Chargers remain well-positioned in the AFC race, but their ability to protect Herbert — and find stability in the run game — may define whether their playoff push holds up through the winter.
