Chargers Are Trading an Undrafted Rookie to the Seahawks

Per Tom Pelissero, Los Angeles is sending Smith to the defending Super Bowl champion Seattle Seahawks for a 2027 sixth-round draft pick.

Smith played college football at the University of Toledo for four years, where he earned Second-team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) honors in 2024 and 2025. As a junior in 2024, he had 58 total tackles (40 solo) and 14 passes defended, and last year, he recorded 42 total tackles (31 solo), 11 passes defended and five tackles for loss.

In L.A.’s first preseason game this year, a 27-7 win over the Houston Texans, Smith logged three total tackles and one pass defended. The following week, he made six total tackles (two solo) versus the San Francisco 49ers, and this past Thursday against the Los Angeles Rams, he had seven total tackles (four solo).

For all three preseason contests, Pro Football Focus (subscription required) gave Smith a 63.3 run defense grade, a 53.7 tackling grade, a 59.4 pass-rush grade, a 59.3 pass coverage grade and an overall grade of 61.1. He committed a total of two penalties, with one apiece being called on him in the games versus the Niners and Rams.

Seattle lost a few big-time contributors this offseason, particularly running back and Super Bowl MVP Kenneth Walker III, safety Coby Bryant and cornerback Riq Woolen. In Smith, it will have a player it can evaluate and try to develop moving forward.
