Chargers coach Anthony Lynn is 'angry' and 'pissed off' about police brutality

Chargers head coach Anthony Lynn is the latest figure in the sports world to speak out in response to the death of George Floyd, as he shared his thoughts in an interview with the L.A. Times. When asked about police brutality and the racism that still permeates in America, Lynn was clear about his feelings.

"I’m angry, I’m pissed off and I don’t want to just put out a pretty statement."

Lynn spoke about the Rodney King riots, saying how he realized how little race relations in America had actually changed in almost 30 years. He said that while he understands the power of words, he wants "to do something too."

"In 1992 I remember watching L.A. burn and here we are in 2020 and I’m watching it again and it just hit me, nothing has changed," Lynn said.

Protests have broken out across the country in response to Floyd's death and several NFL players and coaches have voiced their support of the movement. Additionally, many have pointed to the NFL's unfair treatment of Colin Kaepernick. Lynn said people "completely misunderstood" Kaepernick's protests and said that deserved to be a starting quarterback in the league.

"I didn’t like it," Lynn explained when asked about Kaepernick not getting another job in the NFL. "I know when you look at 32 quarterbacks in the National Football League, Colin could have been one of the 32. If not, he could have been a quality backup. For me being an African American head coach, this is tough."

Lynn also shared a story where he was recently pulled over by police and that the cops were suspicious towards him due to the color of his skin.

"The lights come on, I pull over and the first thing the police officer asked [was] if I was on parole or if I had ever been to jail," Lynn recalled.
