Chargers fans may receive even better news this weekend than their recent Hall of Fame game blowout victory over Lions

The Los Angeles Chargers made their fans rather happy with a strong performance to begin preseason play this week. Jim Harbaugh's team dominated the Detroit Lions. Now, an intriguing roster addition that fans have asked for could be coming for Los Angeles.

Chargers hosting Keenan Allen for visit on Friday

According to reports, the Chargers are hosting veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen on a visit on Friday. Both the player and team have interest in a return to Los Angeles for the former top wideout for the Chargers. Allen spent over a decade with the Bolts to begin his NFL career.

Wide receiver depth impressed versus Detroit

Adding Allen to the mix would be a veteran presence who played good football down the stretch last season for the Chicago Bears. With that, it would strengthen a group who gained more confidence around the NFL world with their performance in the Hall of Fame game. KeAndre Lambert-Smith, a rookie, burst onto the scene following some training camp hype.

Lambert-Smith caught a couple passes for 43 yards and a touchdown. Second-round rookie Tre Harris did not record a catch, but his impact could increase in other preseason matchups. He's still getting used to the scheme and play calls for LA after an early holdout this offseason.

Getting Allen would take a bit of the pressure off these young players, though. Ladd McConkey shouldered a workload last season that even the Chargers coaching staff would probably say was too much at his young age in the pros. He's recovering from a minor injury right now, and the Chargers won't rush him back.

I think you can nitpick the Keenan thing as not being the most ideal fit with Ladd if you want, but at the end of the day cheap WR talent is cheap WR talent.

Not like Ladd can't play some on the outside either.

Over four seasons, the Herbert-Allen connection produced 380 receptions for 4,125 yards and 25 touchdowns. Their best season together was their last in 2023, when Allen caught 108 balls for 1,243 yards and seven TDs in just 13 games. -- NFL.com

All in all, a reunion with Allen has made sense all offseason during his free agency endeavors. We will see if this visit ends in a signed contract between Los Angeles and the former Bolts star.
