The Los Angeles Chargers are on the hunt for their next head coach, and it appears that they may be interested in Urban Meyer as a potential candidate. The Athletic's Bruce Feldman reports that the Chargers "have some interest in Urban Meyer for their head coaching vacancy."
Meyer has mostly been linked to the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the Chargers are an attractive destination in their own right. Quarterback Justin Herbert is the odds-on favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year after setting a ton of rookie records, including the most touchdowns scored. The team is stacked with talent beyond Herbert, including wide receiver Keenan Allen, pass rusher Joey Bosa and running back Austin Ekeler.
It's no surprise that Meyer is a highly sought-after coach. His track record is nearly impeccable, winning three college football National Championships during his time coaching the Florida Gators and Ohio State Buckeyes. In 2018, Meyer was suspended by Ohio State for three games after it was discovered that he knew about spousal abuse allegations against assistant coach Zach Smith prior to Smith's firing. Meyer stepped down after the season due to health reasons and has not coached since.
The Chargers parted ways with Anthony Lynn after finishing the season 7-9. Lynn coached the team for four seasons and was popular with the players, but under his leadership, the team gained a reputation for being unable to win close games, including blowing several leads this season, which many believe caused the Chargers to finish with a record that didn't match the talent on the roster.
