Chargers, Jets Connected In Massive Trade Rumor

The New York Jets are reportedly looking to add talent to the roster, and the team may be trying to trade for wide receiver Quentin Johnston. Head coach Aaron Glenn is on thin ice, and he probably won’t survive another losing season. Following a dismal 3-14 season, the Jets swapped out Justin Fields for Geno Smith and added big names like Minkah Fitzpatrick, Demario Davis, and Joseph Ossai to the defense. While the team should be better in 2026, they still have quite a few holes on the roster.

This is where a Quentin Johnston trade could come in. According to ESPN’s Rich Cimini, New York is actively looking for another receiver, and Johnston is one of four players who could be on the move.

“Don’t sleep on the possibility of [Jets General Manager Darren] Mougey trading for a veteran,” Cimini said. “It’s already been an active offseason for wide receiver trades, and you’re talking about a GM who has made 12 player trades in a little over a year. Brain Thomas Jr., Rashod Bateman, Quentin Johnston, and Dontayvion Wicks have been mentioned as trade possibilities.”

Geno Smith should be an upgrade on Justin Fields, but his short-lived stint with the Raiders shows he’s not capable of overcoming a terrible environment. Garrett Wilson is a legitimate threat on the outside and Adonai Mitchell showed some signs of life during the back half of the 2025 season, but these two won’t be enough to carry Geno Smith. The rest of the depth chart leaves a lot to be desired, and a Quentin Johnston trade could bring some much-needed stability to the room.

Johnston had a rough rookie season but has steadily developed into a dependable part of the Los Angeles Chargers passing attack. While he’s never justified his first-round draft capital, the TCU product finished the 2025 season with a respectable 51 receptions for 735 yards and eight touchdowns. One year earlier, he recorded 55 receptions for 711 yards and eight touchdowns.

In a perfect world, Wilson, Mitchell, and Johnston will serve as a reliable trio for the returning Geno Smith. However, if Mitchell can’t build on his promising Jets debut, then Johnston’s presence will ensure the team has at least two players capable of consistently making plays.
