After starting the new NFL season with three straight victories, Jim Harbaugh and the Los Angeles Chargers have now fallen to 3-2 after suffering back-to-back defeats. This includes Sunday’s disappointing 27-10 home loss to the Washington Commanders at SoFi Stadium.
To add insult to injury, the Chargers also lost first-round rookie Omarion Hampton to an ankle injury during their Week 5 loss to Washington. The former North Carolina Tar Heels star was forced to exit the game in the fourth quarter and was unable to return.
Harbaugh spoke to the press on Monday and delivered some unfortunate news regarding Hampton. According to Chargers beat reporter Daniel Popper of The Athletic, Harbaugh announced that the 22-year-old running back is being placed on injured reserve (IR) because of the ankle issue. This means that Hampton will be out for at least four weeks.
This is the play where Hampton was injured. He gets his ankle kicked which causes him to stumble. Hope it’s not serious.

This is another tough blow for the Chargers, who already lost RB Najee Harris to a season-ending torn Achilles in Week 3. With Hampton now out of commission, L.A.’s running game will take another substantial hit, which could force the offense to lean heavily on quarterback Justin Herbert's passing.
Hampton, the 22nd overall pick of the 2025 NFL Draft, has had a strong start to his rookie campaign. He’s rushed 66 times in his first five games for 314 yards and two touchdowns. Hampton’s noteworthy run has now been put on hold amid his injury.
Given how players placed in IR must miss at least four games, Hampton’s first chance to return would be in Week 10 against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
