Chargers leave 1 position empty but there’s a catch

The Los Angeles Chargers hit the trade market Sunday ahead of finalizing their 53-man roster. So TeRah Edwards now boosts the defensive line for the Carolina Panthers. However, the Bolts never got the chance to complete their two-deep and entire roster under coach Jim Harbaugh.

The Bolts left one position empty. But there’s a catch involving that special teams spot.

NFL insider for The Ringer and Netflix Sports Tom Pelissero revealed the reason.

“The Chargers released punter J.K. Scott, but it’s temporary: He is expected to return to the roster this week, per source,” Pelissero posted on the social media website X, formerly Twitter.

So Harbaugh, quarterback Justin Herbert and the rest of the Chargers have no one who can punt at the moment. But again, they expect him to return. Yet Scott looked like he was on the fringe of a release anyway following one NFL Preseason blunder.

Scott surrendered a punt return for the touchdown against the San Francisco 49ers, with Jacob Cowing taking it back 83 yards into the end zone.

“The punt fell short and in the middle, and then we got out-flanked,” Harbaugh said to reporters following that Aug. 20 lopsided loss to SF 41-17.

Scott worsened things on his end, though, through his infamous tackle attempt.

“He’s got to have a plan when he’s in that position to make the tackle. Something we need to work on, coach up,” Harbaugh said.

But still, the Chargers plan to save a roster spot for Scott to return once he clears waivers. Making the Chargers tardy in completing their 53-man roster.
