Chargers likely to retain offensive coordinator Kellen Moore

Typically, new head coaches get to pick their assistant coaching staff, so holding onto Moore could indicate that any candidate who accepts L.A.’s head-coaching job has to agree to keep Moore on as the OC (it’s highly unlikely he would stay on and accept a demotion.)

In Moore’s first season with the Chargers, the team ranked 18th in total yards (329.4) and 21st in scoring (20.4 points per game), a step back in both areas from the previous season under Joe Lombardi when they ranked ninth and 13th, respectively, in both categories.

However, Moore had to improvise on the fly after losing several key offensive pieces to injury in 2023 including quarterback Justin Herbert (four games), running back Austin Ekeler (three games), receivers Keenan Allen (four games), Mike Williams (14 games) and Joshua Palmer (six games), left guard Zion Johnson (two games) and center Will Clapp (three games).

Despite missing nearly one-quarter of the season, Allen still set a new career high in receptions (108), and he was just nine targets and one touchdown away from matching his career best in those categories as well.

Conversely, Herbert was well on his way to his fourth straight season with at least 4,000 yards passing and 25 touchdown passes.
