Chargers Linked to Star WR Following Mike Williams’ Shocking Retirement

One of the biggest and most widely reported stories of the NFL offseason was the Los Angeles Chargers and their desperate need for a quality wide receiver.

While they snagged a couple promising, young wideouts during this year’s draft, the biggest free agent signing they made at the position was Mike Williams.

The fit was questionable to begin with considering Williams was coming off a two-year span where he tore his ACL, then recorded less than 300 receiving yards despite playing an NFL record 18 games.

The former Pittsburgh Steeler shocked LA a few days ago when he announced his retirement following another major injury, leaving the team scrambling for receiver help.

The Chargers have had ample opportunities to trade for elite pass catchers this offseason, but they’ve passed on each one.

The team put an emphasis on being frugal with their spending this offseason, which is likely why they’ve been hesitant to make a deal.

However, there is a proven receiver available in free agency who would be perfect for the Chargers.

Nick Brinkerhoff of USA Today recently listed the team as a potential landing spot for former Dallas Cowboys superstar Amari Cooper

The five-time Pro Bowler spent last season with the Cleveland Browns and Buffalo Bills where he reeled in just over 500 receiving yards, but don’t let the numbers fool you. Cooper was in a problematic quarterback situation in Cleveland and struggled to find his footing within the Bills offense.

When he had consistent quarterback play in 2023, he posted the best season of his career with over 1,200 yards and 5 touchdowns. The Chargers can offer him that same consistency and probably wouldn’t have to spend too much on the signing.

Snagging Cooper off the open market is the exact type of signing that can take a team to the next level.
