The Los Angeles Chargers are preparing for their Week 11 matchup with the Jacksonville Jaguars, but the spotlight remains on the status of rookie running back Omarion Hampton. Since suffering an ankle injury in Week 5, Hampton has been sidelined, leaving fantasy managers and Chargers fans eager for an update on his return.

Omarion Hampton’s Progress on the Field

Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?

Hampton injured his left ankle late in the third quarter of the Chargers’ loss to Washington, when a defender stepped on the back of his foot on fourth-and-two. The team placed him on injured reserve the following Wednesday, mandating a minimum four-game absence.

While Hampton is now eligible to return from IR, head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed he will not play this week. However, the rookie was recently spotted on the sidelines at practice, the first sign of him returning to on-field work since the injury.

“This is a positive development,” Harbaugh said, noting Hampton’s off-field work. Players often participate in conditioning drills or position work on the side before being cleared for full practice. Seeing Hampton without his walking boot signals meaningful progress and suggests he could be ready to return following the Chargers’ Week 12 bye.

Fantasy Outlook and Backfield Dynamics

Hampton’s absence has allowed Kimani Vidal to shine in the backfield. In Week 10 against Pittsburgh, Vidal carried 25 times for 95 yards and a touchdown, helping the Chargers to a 25-10 win and improving their record to 7-3. His impressive play ensures he will remain a key component of the offense even after Hampton’s return.

Fantasy managers should note that Hampton may not immediately reclaim a workhorse role. While he was a top RB option prior to injury — posting 24.9 points in Week 3 and 27.5 in Week 4 — Vidal’s performance means Hampton could initially serve as a change-of-pace back.

“His return will be carefully managed,” Harbaugh indicated, emphasizing the need to integrate Hampton while rewarding Vidal’s contributions. A potential Week 13 return after the bye provides maximum recovery time and allows for a gradual reintegration into the Chargers’ high-powered offense.

Looking Ahead for the Chargers

The Chargers have navigated a challenging injury landscape this season, including the loss of veteran Najee Harris to a torn Achilles tendon. Yet, with Hampton trending positively, Los Angeles appears poised to regain another key piece for the stretch run. Fantasy managers and fans alike should monitor practice reports closely, as Hampton’s eventual return could immediately impact both the field and fantasy football lineups.
