Chargers New Addition Gets Khalil Mack Comparison
NFL: AFC Wild Card Round-Los Angeles Chargers at Houston Texans Thomas Shea-Imagn Images

The Los Angeles Chargers have made another move to bolster their pass rush, acquiring edge rusher Odafe Oweh from the Baltimore Ravens in exchange for safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick. The Ravens are also sending a future seventh-round selection to Los Angeles, as first reported by NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo.

The trade addresses a glaring depth issue for the Chargers’ defensive front, which has been hampered by injuries and inconsistency through the first month of the season. Gilman became expendable following strong play from Tony Jefferson and Elijah Molden, while Oweh adds both youth and experience to a unit that desperately needed an infusion of athleticism.

Harbaugh’s Familiar Face — and Familiar Praise

Is Jim Harbaugh The Real Life Ted Lasso?

Oweh’s arrival reunites him with Jim Harbaugh, who coached against him frequently during his time at Michigan. Now, the Chargers head coach seems thrilled to have the former first-rounder on his side.

In a report shared by Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Harbaugh offered high praise for his new defender, drawing a striking comparison:

“He’s a lot like Khalil Mack,” Harbaugh said. “Direct rusher, but has speed, has depth, has ability to set the edge. Been a very good, productive young player in his prime.”

That kind of endorsement carries weight — especially coming from a coach who has built his reputation on developing elite front-seven talent. For Harbaugh, the move feels like a reunion of sorts; general manager Joe Hortiz, who was part of the Ravens front office that drafted Oweh in 2021, helped engineer the deal.

What Oweh Brings to Los Angeles

The 26-year-old pass rusher has appeared in five games this season, recording 10 tackles but no sacks. Still, he’s just one year removed from a breakout 2024 campaign, posting 10 sacks and flashing elite speed and bend off the edge. His blend of size, burst, and technique makes him a natural fit in Jesse Minter’s aggressive defensive scheme.

For a Chargers team that has struggled to maintain pressure since Joey Bosa’s departure and Khalil Mack’s stint on injured reserve, Oweh represents both short-term relief and long-term potential. Pairing him with emerging star Tuli Tuipulotu, who tallied four sacks in Week 4, could quietly give Los Angeles one of the most explosive young pass-rushing tandems in the AFC.

If Oweh lives up to Harbaugh’s comparison, the Chargers may have just landed their next game-changing edge threat — and a bridge to the post-Mack era.
