Chargers News: Joshua Kelley Prepared for Significant Role, says Kellen Moore
USA TODAY Sports

Slated to start a new face as the lead back in the Chargers backfield this summer, the Bolts' new system under Kellen Moore has emphasized getting the run game started no matter who gets the bulk of the carries.

After Austin Ekeler's status has been moved to doubtful for Sunday's contest on the road, Moore suggested a next-man-up mentality for Joshua Kelley's role for week 2.

"Just a big-time professional," Moore said. "Obviously, we see the production on the field, but I think he prepares really, really well. He's a great teammate to everyone. He knows his role. He embraces his role. When he gets those opportunities to take advantage of some chances there, he certainly takes advantage of them," Moore added. "As the season goes on, he's a guy — like a number of these running backs — we're going to need different guys to play different roles as the weeks go on."

Nearly splitting carries in a 50/50 ratio with Austin Ekeler against the Dolphins at home, both Bolts' running backs ate against a loose Miami front seven in week 1.

With his teammate likely out for Week 2's tilt on the road against the Titans, it'll be up to the former Bruin to lead the rushing attack for LA.

Affecting by his ankle injury last week, Ekeler's teammate carried the load and looked the part of a dominant leadback on the final drives of the game.

Registering over 100 yards on the ground with a trip to the end zone included in his performance, Moore relayed confidence that Kelley could step into a similar role that Ekeler's been used to in the past few seasons.

It'll take all hands on deck for LA to avoid a 0-2 start for the Bolts, and Kelley figures to be a big part of the equation on Sunday.
