Los Angeles Chargers Justin Herbert underwent surgery on Monday to address a fracture in his left hand. The Pro Bowl quarterback was forced to exit Sunday’s 31-14 blowout win against the Las Vegas Raiders, but, admirably, was able to return to play through the injury.

Herbert finished the game with 15-of-20 completed passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. The Chargers improved to 8-4 after the win and remain at the No. 2 spot in the AFC West, behind the 10-2 Denver Broncos, who have won nine in a row. The Chargers are currently fifth in the conference with five games remaining in the regular season.

Herbert, who has already registered 265-of-396 completed passes (66.9%) in 12 games played this season for 2,842 yards and 10 touchdowns, was suddenly in serious danger of missing time after his unfortunate injury on Sunday. It was confirmed after the game that Herbert suffered a fracture in his left hand, which required surgery. He went under the knife on Monday, and the procedure was successful.

Herbert spoke to reporters on Wednesday to provide a crucial update on his road to recovery and his status for Monday’s highly anticipated primetime showdown against the defending champions, the Philadelphia Eagles.

As reported by Daniel Popper of The Athletic, Herbert announced that the fracture on his non-throwing hand was successfully “stabilized” by the surgery after a plate and multiple screws were put in his hand.

When asked about his availability for Monday’s game, Herbert said, “That’s the plan, is to prepare as if I’m going to play.”

While there is a significant chance that Herbert will be forced to sit out the Eagles game, the fact that he has a shot at playing just one week after surgery is an impressive feat in itself. However, if he is unable to go, backup quarterback Trey Lance will step in to take his place under center.

The Chargers play at home in Monday’s primetime matchup against Philadelphia, which is a team that is in dire need of a win after losing back-to-back games. Kickoff from So-Fi Stadium is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. ET.
