In July, Los Angeles Chargers star Justin Herbert was anointed a Tier 1 quarterback by The Athletic. Now there's more good news from Herbert's orbit: A rookie card of the quarterback soon will be auctioned for more than $1 million.
As of Friday, the Panini National Treasures Platinum NFL Shield rookie card had a bid of $1.38 million with a buyer's premium. The auction by Goldin ends Saturday.
According to Darren Rovell of the Action Network, Herbert would become only the third NFL player to have a card sell for more than $1 million. The others are Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.
Herbert, who's 15-17 in two seasons in the NFL, should get more good news on Sunday in his Week 1 showdown with the Raiders, according to CBS Sports and USA Today prognosticators. They almost unanimously pick the Chargers to win.
CBS Sports NFL Insider Pete Prisco picked the Chargers to defeat their division rival, 30-21.
“The Raiders beat the Chargers in the finale last season to get to the playoffs,” he wrote. “This time around, it will be different. The Chargers at home with Khalil Mack added to the defense will be able to slow down Derek Carr. Justin Herbert will have a big day on the other side.”
Seven of eight members of USA Today's NFL staff picked the Chargers.
Herbert is 2-2 against the Raiders.
