Los Angeles Chargers rookie left tackle Joe Alt is unlikely to suit up in Week 5 against the Washington Commanders, head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Wednesday. Alt suffered a sprained right ankle during the first half of last week’s 21-18 loss to the New York Giants, leaving the Chargers scrambling up front. While Harbaugh acknowledged Alt is “doubtful,” the team has not yet placed him on injured reserve, which would sideline him for at least four weeks.
The 22-year-old, drafted fifth overall in 2024, has already proven his value after starting 16 games as a rookie and earning PFWA All-Rookie Team honors. His sophomore season has hit a bump, but Alt is maintaining a measured approach. “I’m just going to attack every day. We’re going to take it day by day,” he said, per Daniel Popper of The Athletic. Alt, still in a walking boot, even lifted spirits by buying Five Guys for his fellow offensive linemen after practice.
The Chargers are already without star tackle Rashawn Slater, who suffered a season-ending knee injury in training camp, and backup Mekhi Becton, who missed Week 4 with a concussion. Against the Giants, Justin Herbert endured 13 quarterback hits behind a patchwork line.

In Alt’s absence, Austin Deculus and Jamaree Salyer are the most likely fill-ins at left tackle. To bolster depth, Los Angeles signed Foster Sarell to the active roster and added veteran Bobby Hart to the practice squad.
The Chargers’ first Week 5 injury report listed Alt as a non-participant, while other key players — including Keenan Allen, Derwin James, and Mekhi Becton — were limited.
Alt has no official recovery timeline, though the team’s decision not to place him on injured reserve suggests optimism that he could return within a month. For now, Herbert and the Chargers will prepare for Washington with their offensive line stretched thin.
If Los Angeles is going to stay in the AFC West race, finding stability up front without its top three linemen may be the team’s toughest challenge yet.
