Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Tre Harris exited Wednesday’s practice early with trainers, according to ESPN’s Kris Rhim. The severity of the injury is not yet known, but it comes just days after Harris delivered his strongest performance of the preseason.

The former Ole Miss standout had been quiet through the first two games, targeted only twice without a reception. That changed in Saturday’s matchup against the Rams, where Harris caught six of eight targets for 85 yards. His showing earned him a spot on Pro Football Focus’ list of top 10 rookies from Week 2 of the preseason.

“Harris had logged two targets through two games entering Week 2 of the preseason… He secured his lone deep target for 34 yards,” PFF’s Lauren Gray wrote. “His production also came against both coverage schemes — three catches each against zone and single coverage.”

Praise From Coaches and Teammates

Head coach Jim Harbaugh praised Harris’ ability to contribute in multiple ways. “Some big catches showing the catch radius, the ability to catch it over the middle, catch and run, catch on the sideline,” Harbaugh said via the Chargers’ website. “I thought he had a heck of a game.”

Quarterback Trey Lance, who connected with Harris for four completions totaling 69 yards, added: “He’s been doing it in practice, it was just fun to be able to give him the ball. He was consistent, made all the plays that the ball got thrown to him.”

Opportunity Amid Injuries

Harris’ breakout came as second-year wideout Quentin Johnston suffered a concussion, opening more chances for younger receivers. Alongside fellow rookie KeAndre Lambert-Smith, Harris helped spark the Chargers’ passing game; the pair combined for 151 yards on eight catches.

Offensive coordinator Greg Roman credited the rookies’ steady development. “It doesn’t happen overnight, but it happens 0.1 percent point at a time,” Roman said.

Harris knows expectations have now risen. “Each and every game, now that we put it on tape, that’s what we’re going to live by,” he said. “The tape is your resumé.”

Looking Ahead

With Johnston sidelined and Harris now managing an injury of his own, Lambert-Smith figures to see more first-team reps alongside Keenan Allen and Ladd McConkey. The Chargers open their regular season in just over two weeks in Brazil, giving Harris little time to recover before roster decisions are finalized.
