As the Los Angeles Chargers prepare for their Sunday Night Football showdown against the Kansas City Chiefs, all eyes are on the matchup between two of the NFL’s elite: Derwin James and Travis Kelce.

The Chiefs (11-1) sit atop the AFC standings, while the Chargers (8-4) aim to make a statement with a critical divisional victory. For James and Kelce, their rivalry has been one of the league’s most compelling storylines, with physical battles on the field matched by mutual respect off it.

Appearing on “Up & Adams” with Kay Adams on Thursday morning, James made it clear that while there is respect between him and Kelce, their relationship is far from friendly.

“Nah, it ain’t buddy-buddy, but we got respect for each other,” James said. “I know what type of player he is, and he knows who I am," he later added.

The two stars have faced off numerous times, with Kelce delivering standout performances throughout his career against the Chargers.

In 19 games, the eight-time Pro Bowler has tallied 107 receptions for 1,312 yards and nine touchdowns, consistently showcasing why he’s considered one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history.

This season, Kelce has 75 catches for 637 yards and two touchdowns, contributing to Kansas City’s dominance as reigning Super Bowl champions.

James, however, has made his presence felt in their encounters. Known for his physical style and versatility, the All-Pro safety famously body-slammed Kelce during a game in 2022, a play that highlighted his strength and tackling prowess.

James has been pivotal to the Chargers’ defense this season, recording 2.5 sacks, an interception, and six passes deflected.

As the Chargers look to contain Kansas City’s high-powered offense, the spotlight will undoubtedly be on the James-Kelce matchup.
