Charges Dropped Against All-Pro Free Agent

Free agent wide receiver Michael Thomas is one of the biggest names left on the open market, and he could sign a deal shortly now that his legal troubles appear to be in the past. After playing in just 10 games from 2020 to 2022, the two-time All-Pro finally stayed somewhat healthy in 2023. Appearing in 10 games while making seven starts, the former second-round pick finished the season with 39 receptions for 448 yards and one touchdown on 64 targets.

Unfortunately, despite the relatively solid season, the Saints had to part ways with the veteran. Thanks to an absurd amount of contract restructuring, Thomas would have received a staggering $119 million in guaranteed money had he remained with the team. Seeing as he’s not worth nearly that much, the Saints released Michael Thomas and let him test the free agent market.

Michael Thomas has not gone on any reported free agent visits, but that could change now that his legal situation is resolved. Back in October, the wide receiver was charged with simply battery and criminal mischief after he allegedly shoved a contractor and threw a brick through said contractor’s vehicle. Now, the wide receiver will have the charges dropped upon completion of a six-month pre-trial diversion program.

Charges Dropped Against Michael Thomas, Free Agent Interest Could Increase

Michael Thomas is not the player he once was, but he is good enough to receive some free agent interest now that these charges are a thing of the past. While his days in New Orleans are likely over, several teams should be interested in adding an experienced veteran who can get open quickly and be a reliable safety blanket on offense.

Possible Team Fits

Los Angeles Chargers

Michael Thomas is a shell of his former self, but the free agent wide receiver would still be the best option on the Los Angeles Chargers. Quentin Johnston was one of the worst receivers in football last year, and the former first-round pick has a lot of work to do if he wants to salvage his career. Josh Palmer, meanwhile, is nothing more than a journeyman. Jim Harbaugh wants to win with the ground game, but he’ll need to add somebody to help out Justin Herbert. Seeing as most of the good players already have new teams, Thomas might be the best player available.

New England Patriots

Whether it’s Jacoby Brissett or a rookie, New England’s quarterback is not going to have a fun time under center next year. While the offensive line could use some help, all the blocking in the world won’t help this underwhelming group of talent get open. Kenrick Broune and Demario Douglas are fine role players, but the Patriots need someone better to lead the passing attack. Michael Thomas isn’t capable of being a reliable WR1 anymore, but the free agent can be a dependable set of hands for whoever lines up under center for the Patriots.

Baltimore Ravens

Odell Beckham is not coming back to the Ravens, so they’ll need a new veteran wide receiver to fill out the depth chart. The Ravens have two reliable options in tight end Mark Andrews and second-year pro Zay Flowers, so Michael Thomas will not need to be the top option if signed as a free agent. Instead, he’ll be the third or fourth option, which he’s more suited for at this point in his career.

Carolina Panthers

Even with Diontae Johnson, the Carolina Panthers do not have a true star receiver for Bryce Young. While they’ll probably add someone during the 2024 NFL Draft, they could use a third set of proven hands to make up for the top-end talent. Michael Thomas makes perfect sense for this role, and the Panthers should be very familiar with what the free agent brings to the table.

Pittsburgh Steelers

Following the Diontae Johnson trade, the Pittsburgh Steelers only have one reliable wide receiver. George Pickens is a good player, but he shouldn’t be the only option in any passing attack. Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith spent the past three seasons gameplanning against Michael Thomas as head coach of the Falcons, so Smith should have an idea of how to get the best out of the free agent.
