Chicago Bears anticipating historic NFL announcement

Caleb Williams had a memorable second season with the Chicago Bears. The 24-year-old quarterback was the driving force for Chicago’s success in 2025. Williams, however, would not have been in the position to lead the Bears to an impressive campaign had it not been for his offensive line.

Joe Thuney was the heart of Chicago’s O-line and Williams’ top protector all year long. Thuney joined the Bears during the offseason after winning two Super Bowls with Kansas City Chiefs. He signed a two-year, $35 million deal with Chicago. He proved in his first season with the Bears that he’s worth every penny of his big-money contract.

Chicago Bears guard Joe Thuney nominated for inaugural NFL award

Ahead of the 2025 season, the NFL announced the inaugural Protector of the Year Award. For the first time in league history, the NFL will honor offensive linemen for their often-overlooked contributions on the field. According to the NFL’s website, the best offensive lineman of the season will receive the Protector of the Year Award, symbolizing “protection, durability, and the unsung heroics of the players who shield their teammates and drive their teams forward.”

The list of nominees was revealed on Wednesday, and Thuney is one of six finalists for the award. The Bears star will contend with former Chiefs teammate Creed Humphrey, Penei Sewell of the Detroit Lions, Garett Bolles and Quinn Meinerz of the Denver Broncos and Aaron Brewer of the Miami Dolphins.

Thuney and the Bears are now awaiting the NFL’s historic announcement for the first-ever winner of the Protector of the Year Award. TheNFL will announce the winner at the NFL Honors on Feb. 5.

Thuney will take part in the 2026 Pro Bowl games, marking his fourth straight appearance. He earned All-Pro first team honors for a third consecutive season.
