The Chicago Bears won’t release their first Week 8 injury report until Thursday. But on Tuesday, the franchise began their preperations for a difficult Monday Night Football battle against the Seattle Seahawks.
When kickoff happens, the Bears are hoping to have as much of their roster healthy as possible. That wasn’t the case to start practice though, via Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune.
“RB Kyle Monangai and CB Malik Muhammad were not spotted when practice was open to media,” Biggs wrote. “LBs D’Marco Jackson & TJ Edwards did participate. Jackson had a boot on his right foot last Thursday night.”
Muhammad picked up a toe injury against the New England Patriots in Week 7 while Monangai has been out since Week 4 with toe/thumb injuries of his own. Jackson was in a walking boot coming out of Week 7 whereas Edwards has been out since Week 6 with a hamstring injuries.
As the week goes on, Chicago’s injury statues will become more clear. But Tuesday’s session carries weight as well.
The Seahawks enter Week 8 with the sixth-best run defense in the NFL, allowing 89.4 yards per game. They just bottled Kansas City Chiefs star Kenneth Walker up for 36 yards on 14 carries in Week 6.
Prior to his injury, Monangai averaged 5.4 yards per carry. He turned 60 carries into 324 yards and three touchdowns overall. While the Bears are confident in D’Andre Swift and Roschon Johnson, Monangai adds a different speaking to that running back room.
In that Seahawks-Chiefs battle, Seattle receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 150 yards and a touchdown. Not many cornerbacks in the league can stop him. But not having Muhammad on the field would only lower Chicago’s ceiling on a secondary that has already been stumbling.
Getting linebackers TJ Edwards and D’Marco Jackson back would be a boon. Both have been crucial leaders for the defense on the field. Having both available would make the Bears more consistent throughout the entire game.
The Bears will have more info as the week goes on. But at least on Tuesday, things are a bit shaky in Chicago.
