The Chicago Bears are riding serious momentum.

Winners of five of the past six games, and with Caleb Williams saving some of his finest performances for the fourth quarters of four fourth-quarter comebacks so far this season, Chicago has the look of a legitimate contender with the pieces suddenly in place to make an unexpected playoff run.

Chicago Bears protecting the football at elite rate

While Williams’ strong play is stealing the headlines and powering the Bears’ wins, Chicago has been ridiculously efficient at protecting the football this season.

“The Bears have done a great job protecting the ball with only three turnovers since Week 3,” NFL Media’s Eric Edholm points out. “Allowing them to accumulate the league’s best turnover ratio on the season — by far — at plus-14. That’s a big reason why the Bears have won six of their past seven games.”

Turnovers can be back-breaking and game-changing in the NFL, and the Bears have done a tremendous job at preventing them, which limits the opponent’s ability to flip the field and score points off schedule.

Protecting the football has also been critical in putting the Bears in position to steal games late, which head coach Ben Johnson says are the kind of moments that are establishing a winning culture inside Halas Hall.

“I think these wins sometimes can go a longer way for your program than blowouts do,” Johnson recently told reporters.

If the Bears can keep up this pace, Chicago is going to be one of the toughest outs in the NFC.
