Chicago Bears fans left confused by unexpected announcement
UTSA defensive back Zah Frazier (DB09) participates in drills during the 2025 NFL Combine.

The Chicago Bears waived cornerback Zah Frazier on Thursday after he missed his entire rookie season. The Bears selected Frazier with the No. 169 overall pick in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.

The former University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA) product participated in rookie minicamp in May 2025. However, the Bears placed him on the non-football injury/illness list in August, which kept him out for the entire season. He did not play a single game for the team.

The Bears cited a personal issue, but neither Frazier nor the team provided specific details about it. The 6-foot-3 cornerback only attended classroom and weight room sessions during his short tenure in Chicago. The move gives the team an open spot on their 90-man roster, which they can fill in the coming days.

Fans expressed confusion and frustration over the team’s decision to release the young defensive back.

“What?? Why?” a fan wrote.

“I know confidentiality, all that, but I’m really curious as to what happened,” another commented.

“Waste of a pick. Bigger waste of everyone’s time. Will we ever know what went on?” a user said.

“Waived him why??? Could have been great I was excited for him this upcoming year. Another dumb decision,” one supporter posted.

“Smh makes no sense,” another wrote.

“Why… didn’t even give him a [expletive] chance,” a fan commented.

Frazier entered Chicago after earning First-Team All-American Athletic Conference honors in 2024 at UTSA. He led the AAC with a career-high six interceptions that season, setting a single-season program record.

The 25-year-old cornerback began his college career at Southern Illinois in 2019. He then transferred to Coffeyville Community College for the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Frazier later played three seasons with the UTSA Roadrunners from 2022 to 2024, appearing in 29 games. He started 10 of 12 games for the team and recorded the second-most interceptions among all FBS defenders.

A native of Cedartown, Georgia, Frazier starred at Cedartown High School. There, he recorded 93 tackles and 10 interceptions and earned all-region honors twice. Had he not been waived, Frazier would have been eligible to join Chicago’s rookie minicamp, which starts this Friday.
