Despite losing six starters on defense to injury, the Chicago Bears are now 8-3 and still in first place in the NFC North. Despite the numerous injuries, the Bears’ defense leads the NFL in takeaways.

One of the biggest success stories of the 2025 season is cornerback Nashon Wright. Wright has stepped up since Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon went on injured reserve. The second-year defensive back has struggled at times but has seen major strides of improvement. Through the 10 games he has started, Wright has five interceptions. Wright is now tied with fellow Bear Kevin Byard for the league’s most.

Nashon Wright’s improvement has been a major success story for the Chicago Bears

Wright got his fifth interception of the year in the first quarter of Sunday’s win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The defensive back made an incredible one-handed grab on Mason Rudolph’s first pass attempt of the game. The 27-year-old defensive back also has 10 pass deflections and two fumble recoveries.

With Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon potentially returning this week for Friday’s clash against the Eagles, it seemed uncertain what Wright’s role will be for the rest of the season. However, Ben Johnson revealed that the young defensive back has earned playing time regardless.

When asked about Wright’s role when Jaylon Johnson returns from injured reserve, the Bears’ head coach confirmed that the defensive back will still be a key part of the Bears’ defense

According to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, Johnson heaped major praise on Wright. Johnson told the media on Monday, “He’s done a phenomenal job. I think he has certainly earned play time.”

Johnson went on to explain how Wright has been a key factor in the Bears’ run defense.

“ I thought what’s undersung about what Shonny is doing right now is how much he’s influencing the run game as well. He’s coming up, he’s tackling the ball carrier, they’re throwing a bubble screen and he’s knifing through the play there.”

With the Bears’ Pro Bowl cornerback set to return as early as this week, it’s clear that Wright will still be seeing the field regardless. It could be a possibility that Wright splits reps with Tyrique Stevenson when Johnson and Gordon return.
