The Chicago Bears made a blockbuster trade for Jeffery Simmons last week, and they could be adding another former Tennessee Titans defensive lineman to the roster amid injuries at the position.
The Bears placed defensive tackle Kentavius Street on injured reserve this week due to a knee injury he suffered in Monday night’s 34-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Street could miss the rest of the season.
Per NFL insider Jordan Schultz, the Bears will bring defensive tackle Jordan Elliott in for a workout next week. The 2020 third-round pick by the Cleveland Browns has made 65 career starts, recording 159 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, and 5 sacks.
Elliott was released by the Titans on Oct. 20 after he alleged pulled a gun at the team’s facility following an altercation with right tackle JC Latham on the practice field, per the NFL.
Titans head coach Robert Saleh defended Elliott’s character after the release, saying the defensive lineman made a poor choice in the moment.
“Unfortunately, rules are rules with regard to guns on property, and sometimes it’s far greater than the knee-jerk reaction of kicking somebody when they’re down,” Saleh said.
“He’s a good man. Made a terrible, had a terrible lapse in judgment that I recognize as a call for help more than a criminal act. He’s never committed a crime in his entire life and he pulled a gun, in the parking lot.”
Saleh said he would be willing to help Elliott land with a new team in the future.
“My message to 31 other teams would be: If you need a hell of a run-stopping D-tackle that can help you on a playoff run, give me a call,” Saleh said, via ESPN. “I’ll tell you everything you need to know about him. He’s a good man.”
Elliott signed a two-year deal worth $8 million with the Titans in March. He has 11 total tackles on the season.
The Bears will have an opportunity to see if Elliott would be a good fit on the team. Given his connection to Simmons, it’s fair to think the new anchor of the defense had a say in bringing in Elliott.
