It’s now official, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams will have to miss time with his hamstring strain. But how much exactly is still not known.
Williams has already been ruled out for Week 3’s matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Furthermore, the revelation he’s dealing with a Grade 2 hamstring strain puts the quarterback on a multi-week trajectory. At the very least, Chicago will be closely monitoring their superstar as the weeks go on.
In his absence, either Case Keenum or Tyson Bagent will be under center. Keenum is starting in Week 3, but Bagent has now fully passed the concussion protocol. While neither offers Williams’ skillset – not many do – the pressure will be on for them to still lead Chicago’s offense forward.
Depending on how Williams heals, the backup QB’s time in the sun may be short-lived. The Bears at least seem confident their quarterback will return sooner rather than later.
The Bears didn’t make any roster moves prior to their Monday Night Football matchup. That bodes well for a Williams return, via Courtney Cronin of ESPN.
“The Bears did not make any roster moves,” Cronin said. “With QB Caleb Williams not going on IR ahead of MNF, it’s a sign that the team believes he can return from a hamstring injury within 4 games.”
If the Bears placed Williams on injured reserve, he would’ve been forced to miss the next four games minimum. The fact Chicago didn’t points to their belief he won’t be out that long. Nothing is guaranteed and Williams’ status on the injury report will be crucial. But not being placed on IR leads to some optimism.
Chicago will have plenty to prove in Week 3, battling without their quarterback. But if the Bears pull off a win, it shows their playoff hopes are legit.
