Caleb Williams’ mobility has been a catalyst for the Chicago Bears’ offense this season, but it might take more than his ability to make big gains on the run to knock off the NFC North rival Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
In the first meeting between these two teams, in the regular-season opener in Chicago, the Vikings sacked Williams twice, in a 27-24 Bears loss at Soldier Field.
While Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores has developed a healthy respect for Williams over the course of this season, it is the Bears’ quarterback’s ability to evade pressure that may be pivotal on Sunday.
According to Pro Football Focus, Williams continuing to evade sacks and negative plays just might be the biggest key to the Bears logging a pivotal division victory.
“Caleb will have to continue his elite sack avoidance,” PFF writes. “Against a Vikings pass rush that has been highly effective at getting to the quarterback. This season, Minnesota ranks first in pressure rate (44.4%), quick-pressure rate (32.2%) and average time to pressure (2.35 seconds). In the season opener, the Vikings pressured Caleb on 20 dropbacks — his most in a game this season — but were only able to get him on the ground twice.”
Flores’ scheme is predicated on sending relentless pressure, and could once again prove to be one of the biggest tests for both Williams and a revamped Bears offensive line.
So far this season, Williams has only been sacked 14 times, but staying upright in the pocket might be the most imporant ingredient to a Bears win over Flores’ Vikings.
